Writing in the February 2008 issue of Cruising World, author Angus Phillips had this to say about their visit, aboard Tom Vesey's 'Jackrabbit' to the Dobson Yacht Club:

'A wild gale swept across Nova Scotia on our scheduled departure day, bringing 50-knot winds behind a cold front. Vesey wisely delayed casting off, which gave us time to sample the pleasures of the Dobson Yacht Club in Sydney, where the beers, according to our chatty bartender, Cheryl, “are the cheapest anywhere in town.”

'Sydney is the nearest major harbor for sailors to use as a departure point for a voyage to southern Newfoundland—if you're really stuck, you can just follow the the ferry over to Channel-Port aux Basques—and Dobson's is the place to tie up while waiting for a weather window. It's an all-volunteer club, simple and inexpensive, and if things go sideways, the burly guys at the bar pile out cheerfully to lend a hand. When Vesey's vessel began pounding the pier in the howling, daylong blow that preceded our departure, an eight-man gang led by Dobson's stalwart Robert Etheridge raced to the rescue and handed it around to a more sheltered spot.'
